At a crucial moment for Libya’s future, the government based in Benghazi held its first regular meeting of 2025, chaired by Dr. Osama Hamad, Head of the Cabinet, alongside Vice President Ali Qatrani. Joined by a wide array of ministers and senior officials, the session laid the foundations for what promises to be a decisive year for the country, marked by efforts to overcome internal challenges and move toward more equitable and sustainable development.

In his opening speech, Ali Qatrani emphasized the importance of reflecting on the achievements of the past year and the lessons learned, in order to address the challenges of the new period more efficiently. He also underscored the government’s commitment to continue working on national interests, particularly in improving public services, reducing inflation, and strengthening citizens’ trust in state institutions.

The meeting began with the presentation of annual reports by the ministers, who outlined their departments’ major activities in 2024, as well as strategic plans and goals for the new year. Among the topics discussed, the urgent need to address growing pressures on key sectors such as health, education, security, and the economy, as well as promoting policies that favor social and economic stability, stood out.

One of the most debated points was inflation and its direct impact on the daily lives of Libyan citizens. The ministers agreed on the need to implement stricter measures for controlling prices and increasing transparency in the markets. Minister of Economy Issam Maatouk emphasized the importance of diversifying the economy and strengthening national productive sectors to reduce dependency on oil revenues and mitigate the effects of inflation.

Additionally, the state of public services and the country’s infrastructure were identified as major challenges for the government. Minister of Public Works Nasr Sharah Bal stressed the urgency of improving vital infrastructure, while Minister of Health Dr. Othman Abdul Jalil pointed to the need to strengthen the healthcare system and improve the quality of medical care, especially in regions most affected by instability.

Minister of Justice Khaled Masoud also highlighted the importance of strengthening the rule of law and promoting the fight against corruption as key measures for improving governance and restoring public trust in state institutions. Meanwhile, Minister of Interior Major Issam Buzariba spoke about initiatives to improve internal security, which remains a crucial factor for citizens’ stability and well-being.

One of the most significant decisions of the session was the creation of an interministerial committee tasked with evaluating the obstacles faced by different government sectors and coordinating efforts to resolve them. This committee will take a comprehensive approach, aiming to address specific problems in each ministry while enhancing cooperation between them.

Finally, the government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international relations and cooperation with international organizations as a key means of securing the technical and financial support needed to implement necessary structural reforms.

The meeting concluded with a clear message of unity and determination. Cabinet members committed to working closely together, acknowledging the importance of overcoming challenges and pushing forward economic and social reforms that will benefit all Libyans. In this first meeting of 2025, the Libyan government made it clear that despite the difficulties, it is determined to move toward a more stable, prosperous, and just future for the country.
