The recent visit to Malta by the deputy commander associated with Saddam Haftar marks a new step in the international projection of Libyan leadership on security and regional stability. The meetings are part of a broader strategy aimed at consolidating alliances in the central Mediterranean, a key area for migration flows and European geopolitical dynamics.
During the visit, the Libyan delegation held an intensive agenda of high-level meetings with Maltese officials. Among them was a key meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Ian Borg, where both sides explored ways to expand bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors such as trade, education, and investment. The talks reflected a shared interest in diversifying relations beyond the strictly security sphere.
On the defense front, the deputy commander held an important meeting with Malta’s Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Defence, Byron Camilleri. Discussions focused on strengthening joint mechanisms to combat irregular migration and dismantle human trafficking networks, a persistent challenge in the region. Both delegations agreed on the need for closer and more effective coordination.
One of the most notable outcomes was the consideration of specialized training programs aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the Libyan Coast Guard. These initiatives are intended to reinforce maritime border control and contribute to a safer and more orderly management of migration flows—an issue of concern for both North African and European countries.
The visit also included a meeting with former Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who praised the role of Libyan authorities in promoting stability. Muscat highlighted that progress in security has a direct impact on the balance of the Mediterranean, a region where international cooperation is essential.
Overall, the visit underscores a clear effort to strengthen the image of leadership and commitment of Libyan authorities on the international stage. The push for strategic partnerships with European countries such as Malta reflects a willingness to move toward shared solutions in security, development, and regional governance.
