Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar received the head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh, at the General Command headquarters in Benghhazi in a meeting that once again placed Libya’s political future at the center of international attention.
During the meeting, Haftar expressed the eastern-based military leadership’s support for United Nations efforts aimed at advancing a consensual political solution capable of bringing long-term stability to the country after more than a decade of institutional fragmentation and armed conflict. The talks were also attended by members of both delegations and political representatives linked to the UN-sponsored dialogue process.
Discussions focused on the latest developments in Libya’s political landscape, particularly efforts to unify state institutions and lay the groundwork for future presidential and parliamentary elections. Both Haftar and Tetteh stressed the importance of continued coordination between local and international actors to break the political deadlock that has persisted since the collapse of the planned 2021 elections.
The Benghazi meeting comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Libya. The country remains divided between rival administrations in the east and west, while the international community continues working to consolidate a roadmap capable of restoring institutional legitimacy and preventing renewed violence. The United Nations maintains that any lasting solution must include political reforms, security guarantees, and broad consensus among Libya’s competing factions.
Haftar remains a central figure in Libya’s balance of power. Although he does not officially hold the presidency, he maintains significant military and political influence across eastern Libya and in strategic areas linked to energy production and border security. His support for the UN-backed political process is widely viewed by international observers as a crucial factor in reviving negotiations toward a viable electoral framework.
For her part, Hanna Tetteh has continued an active diplomatic tour across several Libyan cities aimed at narrowing divisions between rival factions and promoting an inclusive political process capable of leading to unified and stable national institutions.
