In a strategic move, Chinese President Xi Jinping contacted European leaders Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz within 24 hours, seeking to consolidate a united front with the European Union against the trade and diplomatic policies promoted by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
During the talks, Xi emphasized the need for collaboration to preserve the international order and strengthen European strategic autonomy. To Macron, he proposed advancing in resolving trade disputes, while to Merz he offered to expand cooperation in key sectors such as the automotive industry and artificial intelligence, as well as opening the door to increased mutual investment.
This initiative fits within Beijing’s strategy of rapprochement with Brussels amid growing global tensions, aiming to form a bloc that counters the isolationist and protectionist policies characteristic of the Trump era. Despite historical differences, China is betting on a stable and cooperative relationship with the EU to jointly face international challenges.
