Donald Trump is reportedly considering selling the Tesla he purchased in March as a gesture of support for Elon Musk, according to a senior White House official. The move comes after weeks of public tensions between the U.S. president and the Tesla and X CEO, with whom Trump had previously shared a close relationship.
Trump, who once praised Musk as “one of America’s great innovators,” is said to feel “betrayed” by several recent statements made by the billionaire, including his criticism of Trump’s immigration policies and his growing ties to groups the president deems “politically toxic.”
“He’s very disappointed in Elon. He thought they shared a common vision for the country and its future. Now he’s not so sure,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The cooling of their relationship has become increasingly visible, with Trump notably avoiding mention of Musk in recent public appearances and making pointed remarks about Tesla’s direction: “It’s not the company it was a few years ago,” he said in an informal interview picked up by U.S. media.
Trump’s Tesla—a high-end model—was purchased with fanfare as a symbol of support for American innovation and for Musk himself, then one of Trump’s favored business figures. But now, with his reelection campaign underway and polls tightening, the president’s team is reportedly reassessing whether that image is still politically advantageous.
Elon Musk has not directly responded to Trump’s comments, though he hinted on X that “principles matter more than personal loyalties.”
The possible sale of the car highlights not just a falling-out between two iconic figures of American power, but also the fragility of political alliances in an era shaped by shifting interests, media strategies, and ideological divisions within the conservative movement itself.
