Libyan Unity Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibé, affirms his “full support for his work”
The United States has welcomed the appointment of Abdoulaye Bathili as the new United Nations envoy for Libya at a critical time for the country after the latest clashes between rival militias in the capital, Tripoli, which killed at least 32 people.
“The outbreak of violence in Tripoli in August underscored the unsustainability of the situation, making clear the need for all parties to work in good faith and with a sense of urgency to reach agreement on a constitutional framework and a concrete timetable for elections. ”, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.
In this sense, from Washington they have indicated that they will lend «full support» to the new envoy in his objective of mediating in this political process, while they have called on the international community to work «in unison» with Bathili.
«The Libyan people have demanded the opportunity to elect their leaders through free and fair elections, which are essential to confer legitimacy and ensure the accountability of a new government,» he said, adding that it is necessary to «prioritize efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in Libyan state institutions.”
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Friday the appointment of Abdoulaye Bathili as UN special envoy for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission (UNSMIL) in the country.
Bathili previously served as deputy special envoy of the Secretary General in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) between 2013 and 2014, as well as special envoy for Central Africa and head of the United Nations regional office for Central Africa. (UNOCA) in Gabon, between 2014 and 2016.
After learning of the appointment, the Libyan prime minister of unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibé, affirmed his «full support for his work.»
«We will move towards a comprehensive political solution that will accelerate the issuance of a consensual constitutional basis for the holding of the elections,» he said, according to the newspaper ‘The Libyan Observer’.
