The Libyan government is making rapid progress in the reconstruction of Derna, with the inauguration of the Pearl Hotel and the launch of key projects such as the Harish Hospital and 2,000 residential units, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and revitalization of the community following the natural disaster.

In an effort to demonstrate the swift recovery of Derna after the devastating natural disaster last year, the President of the Libyan Government, Dr. Osama Hamad, attended the opening of the Pearl Hotel this Sunday, one of the most emblematic infrastructures that has been rehabilitated as part of the ambitious reconstruction and development program promoted by the government.

The event, held with great anticipation, was attended by prominent political figures, including the President of the House of Representatives, Counselor Aqila Saleh, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Muftah Al-Qawi, and Khaled Najm, Chairman of the Administrative Supervision Board. Key ministers, government deputies, military security leaders, and several local community members were also present.

During his speech at the inauguration, the Prime Minister emphasized the extraordinary speed with which the reconstruction work has been carried out. «We are reaping the fruits of the tireless efforts of our teams and citizens, who, in less than a year since the start of the works, have achieved significant transformation in Derna,» highlighted Hamad. He also thanked the cooperation of the local population, who, according to him, have played a fundamental role in supporting and motivating the progress of the projects.

The Pearl Hotel, restored to the highest international standards, is just one of many projects completed by the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund. This organization has been working tirelessly to revitalize Derna and the surrounding areas severely affected by the floods, with the collaboration of engineers, technicians, and citizens.

Visits to Key Facilities

Dr. Hamad’s visit to Derna was not limited to the opening of the hotel. During a tour of the city, he also inspected the Harish Hospital, a medical center that has been reconstructed and equipped with cutting-edge technology after suffering severe damage. This hospital is now one of the most important in the region and is part of the government’s efforts to ensure quality medical services in areas affected by the disaster.

Additionally, Hamad visited the historic Companion Mosque, which was restored while respecting its original design, an important landmark for the local community due to its cultural and religious value. The preservation of this mosque symbolizes the government’s commitment not only to material reconstruction but also to the restoration of the heritage and identity of the city.

Infrastructure and Housing Projects

The Prime Minister also inspected the construction of the 2,000 residential units project, aimed at providing homes for citizens who lost their houses during the floods. This housing project is one of the most ambitious in the reconstruction of Derna, and its progress has been made possible through the joint efforts of the Development Fund and local authorities.

Port Bridge

Another significant milestone during Hamad’s tour was his visit to the port bridge, the largest structure in the city, connecting the east and west of Derna. This bridge, vital for connectivity and the economic development of the region, is an example of the impressive engineering works being carried out in the city.

Commitment to the Future

During his speech at the Pearl Hotel, Hamad expressed pride in the government’s and citizens’ ability to overcome challenges. «Despite the difficulties and tight deadlines, we have demonstrated that with determination and hard work, it is possible to fulfill our promises,» he stated. He also announced the imminent opening of the Derna Sports Complex, which will host the Arab Mini Football Championship, a historic event for Libyan sports.

The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of cooperation among the various authorities involved in the reconstruction process, especially thanking the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund for its key role in these achievements. Finally, he directed a message to the residents of Derna, thanking them for their patience and support, essential elements for the success of the recovery plans.

With the opening of new projects and the initiation of others, Derna is heading towards a prosperous future, where the wounds of the past will be replaced by a revitalized city full of opportunities.
