The mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, accompanied by the councilor of the municipal area of Economic Promotion and Primary Sector, Raquel García, and by the councilor of the Works area, Leopoldo Díaz Oda, has met with the representative of the Brotherhood of Our Lady de las Mercedes de Los Cristianos, Félix Melo, with the aim of addressing possible lines of collaboration with the sector, with a view to the aid package for the reactivation of the municipality’s business fabric, which in 2021 will amount to 2.5 million euros.
Although last year this organization received a grant to open a direct point of sale, which amounted to 34,000 euros, “in the face of 2021 we have to work rigorously to find out in what concrete way the City Council can support the fishing sector, with clear and legally viable proposals. We want to provide solutions – the mayor added – that allow the municipality’s fishermen to be promoted in a real way”.
In this way, both Mena and the councilor for the Economic Promotion area have conveyed to the representative of the brotherhood the willingness of the municipal government to support the fishing sector in those needs in which the Arona City Council may intervene.
“From the beginning of the economic crisis – the mayor has assured us – we said that we would go as far as legally and budgetary as possible to face it, and we have been doing so. In the case of fishermen – he added – we have sat down to address specific lines of work that are effective”
