The centers for the elderly were the first to close and also the last to open, and this week the two centers in the municipality (‘La Alborada’ and the ‘Club for the Third Age’) are already operating.
The elderly have been one of the groups most affected by the pandemic at all levels, but the San Miguel de Abona City Council has always tried to meet their needs, even from home. Thus, the users of ‘La Alborada’ have received occupational therapy at home, daily, free of charge and with the same caregivers at the center so that they do not lose them as a reference. For their part, the users of the Senior Citizen Club also received homework and once the pandemic gave a truce, they have carried out outdoor activities, excursions.
The mayor, Arturo González, states that «their closings were hard and their openings were a great joy, because our centers are spaces for coexistence and experiences and the pandemic took them away from their routines from one day to the next.»
For her part, Nuria Marrero, Councilor for Social Services, emphasizes that “although this return to everyday life is very positive, we cannot forget where we come from and how much this pandemic has punished our society and, in particular, our elders”.
It should be noted that while these centers have remained closed, it has been used to carry out adaptation, improvement and maintenance works at the facilities. In addition, for their opening, they have an exhaustive contingency plan against covid-19 so that the service is provided with maximum security and with all the guarantees.
