The Marshal of the General Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces, Khalifa Haftar, officially inaugurated a series of development and service projects in the southern city of Merzaq this Saturday. He was accompanied by the Prime Minister, Dr. Osama Hamad, and the Director of the Development and Reconstruction Fund, Engineer Balqasim Haftar. The event marked a renewed push for stability and a return to normal life in a region that has long suffered from institutional neglect.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by high-ranking government and parliamentary officials, military and security leaders, tribal representatives, and local residents. The strong turnout highlighted Merzaq’s strategic and symbolic importance in Libya’s broader national reconciliation process.
Among the projects launched were 1,500 rehabilitated residential units, newly renovated healthcare and educational facilities, government buildings, and extensive upgrades to essential infrastructure, including water, electricity, and road networks.
This development initiative follows the national reconciliation agreement signed last September between the Tabu and Ahali communities in Merzaq. The accord, endorsed by the country’s top political and military leadership, represents a significant step toward healing ethnic divisions and reintegrating marginalized regions.

“The return to life in Merzaq begins with tangible actions,” said the Commander-in-Chief during the ceremony. “Reconstruction is a right for all Libyan citizens, especially those who have long awaited basic services and stability.”
Through these efforts, the government aims to consolidate social peace, promote equitable development across Libya’s south, and foster a climate of intercommunal cooperation—essential pillars for the country’s ongoing reconstruction.
