One year after the devastating flooding caused by Storm Daniel, the Libyan government launches major development and service projects in Darna, emphasizing efforts to restore normal life through an ambitious reconstruction plan.
In a ceremony filled with symbolism and hope, Libyan Prime Minister Dr. Osama Hamad attended the «Night of Jasmine» in the city of Darna, an event reflecting the progress made in revitalizing a region devastated by Storm Daniel a year ago. The city, one of the hardest hit by the floods, is now witnessing the launch of several development and service projects, marking a crucial step in its recovery.

The ceremony, held at Darna’s sports complex, not only celebrated the opening of new infrastructure but also showcased the Libyan government’s political will to expedite the reconstruction process. Accompanied by top officials, including the Director-General of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, Engineer Abul Qasim Haftar, and the military zone commander, Abdul Basit Bogris, the Prime Minister emphasized that the reconstruction of Darna is not only a national priority but also a symbol of resilience for the country.
“This is a pivotal moment in Libya’s history. The recovery of Darna is a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring that none of our cities are left behind in this reconstruction process,” Dr. Hamad stated in his speech. Local authorities and Darna residents, present in large numbers, shared the optimism as visible progress was made in infrastructure and public services.
Storm Daniel, which severely affected the region in 2023, left a trail of destruction but also spurred a coordinated national and international response to rebuild what was lost. Since then, the government has launched a series of initiatives to restore both the local economy and the living conditions of its citizens.

The «Night of Jasmine,» conceived as a cultural celebration, served as a reminder of Libya’s ability to overcome adversity while highlighting the vital role of cooperation between the state and residents in this urban revival. With the inauguration of new infrastructure projects, Darna is beginning to move beyond the echoes of disaster, aiming for a more promising and stable future.
The reconstruction of this coastal city has become a key focus of the Libyan government’s political agenda, now seeking to bolster its image both domestically and internationally through effective and swift recovery management.
