Libya is preparing for the municipal elections on November 16, 2024, with the installation of 320 voting centers in 58 municipalities across the country. More than 210,000 citizens have registered to vote, reflecting significant public interest in participating in the strengthening of local governance.
Although it was initially thought that the elections would cover 60 municipalities, two have been excluded due to judicial decisions. Despite this change, the first phase of the elections will still take place in 17 municipalities in the south, 31 in the west, and 12 in the east of the country.
The High National Electoral Commission (HNEC), under the leadership of Emad Al-Sayeh, has confirmed that all voting centers will be ready to ensure a smooth electoral process. In recent days, 98 mayors and municipal leaders from various regions have expressed their support for the holding of these elections, reaffirming the importance of respecting the electoral calendar to ensure the continuity of local governance.
Additionally, international cooperation has been highlighted, with a recent meeting between Al-Sayeh and the Egyptian Ambassador to Libya, Tamer El-Hefny, to discuss Egypt’s support for the electoral process. This backing underscores the regional significance of these elections, which are considered a key step toward stability and strengthening democracy in the country. Voting centers will be open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, following HNEC’s official Resolution No. 121.
