In an unprecedented success, Libyan authorities have intercepted the largest cocaine shipment in the country’s history, confiscating 200 kilos of pure cocaine at the port of Benghazi, with an estimated value of around $45 million. The shipment, originating from Ecuador and destined for Europe, was hidden in two containers aboard a cargo ship.
This achievement highlights the efficiency and commitment of the Tariq ibn Ziyad Brigade, part of the Libyan National Army (LNA), in its relentless efforts to secure borders and combat the drug trafficking networks threatening regional stability. The operation was conducted with the support of specialized military units, including sniffer dogs, to locate the hidden drugs.
International cooperation, which included a prior alert from the Saudi General Directorate for Narcotics Control, was key to the success of the operation. The swift response by Libyan forces reflects their growing capacity to tackle the global threat of drug trafficking, preventing Libya from becoming a transit hub for international cartels seeking routes to Europe.

The seizure underscores Benghazi’s crucial role as a stronghold in the fight against organized crime in the Mediterranean. This success not only enhances the country’s security but also contributes to the protection of international maritime routes, vital to the region’s stability. The involvement of local forces and collaboration with international agencies highlights Libya’s commitment to eradicating this global scourge, which not only affects African nations but also impacts Europe and other continents.
International congratulations, directed at both the Tariq ibn Ziyad Brigade and the government of Benghazi, recognize Libya’s leadership and effectiveness in fighting drug trafficking. This operation serves as a clear example of how international cooperation and local dedication can halt the progress of drug cartels, a plague that destabilizes not just the involved nations but the global community as a whole.
This blow to drug trafficking marks a milestone in regional security, sending a clear message: international coordination is vital to combat criminal networks. Libya, with its strategic position in the Mediterranean, has shown its willingness and capability to play a crucial role in the fight against drug trafficking, strengthening its image not only as a control point in Africa but also as a key player in global security.
