The Libyan government grants a public holiday on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, with the option to extend the break through the weekend.
The Prime Minister of the Government of Libya, Dr. Osama Hamad, has issued Resolution No. 214 for the year 2024, declaring Wednesday, October 23, as a public holiday across the country to commemorate Libya’s Independence Day. The holiday will apply to all public institutions and government facilities, though essential services may continue to operate, with employees working on this day entitled to compensation in accordance with national labor laws.
In addition, the second article of the resolution specifies that Thursday, October 24, 2024, a working day between the holiday and the weekend, may be taken as an additional day off, counted against employees’ annual leave, effectively allowing workers to enjoy an extended break through the weekend.
The Libyan government emphasizes its commitment to the well-being of its citizens while balancing the need for essential services. This decision comes as the country continues to strive for stability and prosperity amid ongoing political and social challenges.
Libya’s Independence Day, celebrated on October 23, marks the country’s declaration of independence in 1951, which ended colonial rule and led to the establishment of the Kingdom of Libya under King Idris I.
