The city of Benghazi has become a regional medical hub this week with the launch of an ambitious program of high-complexity pediatric surgeries, featuring the participation of 77 specialists from Arab and European countries. This pioneering initiative aims to transform pediatric healthcare across Libya.
These surgical procedures, part of a comprehensive applied scientific program, focus on treating serious medical cases among Libyan children, many of whom previously had no access to this level of care within the country. The operations cover a wide range of specialties, including colon and urinary tract deformities, and are being performed completely free of charge, relieving families of both the financial and emotional burden of seeking treatment abroad.

The initiative coincides with the Conference of the Arab Association of Pediatric Surgery, held in Benghazi from July 23 to 26. Throughout the conference, international experts are sharing the latest techniques, innovations, and surgical practices via scientific presentations and live operating room workshops with participation from Libyan doctors.
Dr. Fadwa Al-Faidi, chair of the organizing committee, emphasized that the event “is the culmination of a significant scientific and logistical effort to place Libya on the regional map of pediatric surgery.” She noted that a key objective is to train and empower local medical personnel, ensuring long-term improvements in national healthcare.

The program is supported by Prime Minister Dr. Osama Hamad and forms part of a broader government strategy to localize specialized medical treatment, enhance healthcare infrastructure, and offer high-quality services at no cost to patients.
According to the organizing committee, this initiative represents not only a medical breakthrough but also an act of dignity and social justice, bringing renewed hope to dozens of Libyan families and setting a new course for the nation’s healthcare system.
