In a landmark event for Libya’s healthcare system, the city of Benghazi witnessed the launch of activities aimed at localizing medical treatment within the country. This strategic initiative seeks to reduce dependence on overseas healthcare services and enhance the quality of care provided to citizens.

The event, held under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Osama Hamad and implemented by the Ministry of Health, was attended by high-ranking national and international officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ali Qatrani, Minister of Health Dr. Othman Abdel-Jalil, and prominent leaders such as Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who spearheads the acclaimed «Marshal’s Initiative» for healthcare.

Among the attendees were Libyan government ministers, members of the House of Representatives, hospital directors, and medical experts from Libyan cities such as Tripoli and Misrata, as well as guests from neighboring Egypt.

Key Advancements in Healthcare
The program to localize medical treatment in Libya has already shown remarkable results. Over the past year, the following procedures have been successfully performed:

  • 135 spinal curvature orthopedic surgeries.
  • 550 corneal implants.
  • 1,600 retinal surgeries and 1,200 cataract (blue water) operations.
  • 25 pediatric cochlear implants.
  • 1,600 eyelid and tear duct surgeries.

Additionally, the program included the establishment of a specialized department for root implants and the inauguration of the kidney transplant department at the Benghazi Medical Center.

In his speech, Minister of Health Dr. Othman Abdel-Jalil presented a documentary illustrating the success of complex procedures conducted in local hospitals, emphasizing the collective efforts of Libyan medical professionals. “This achievement marks a milestone in our mission to ensure healthcare justice and ease the economic burden on patients and the state,” he affirmed.

Acknowledgments and Future Outlook
During the conference, Marshal Khalifa Haftar was praised for his vision in strengthening the healthcare sector, considered a crucial step toward improving living conditions in Libya. Deputy Prime Minister Ali Qatrani also extended his gratitude to the President of the Libyan Construction Company for Medical Services for overcoming obstacles and advancing healthcare infrastructure.

The event concluded with recognition of Marshal Haftar, Prime Minister Dr. Osama Hamad, and Minister of Health Dr. Othman Abdel-Jalil for their efforts and leadership in this ambitious project.

With these initiatives, Libya reaffirms its commitment to providing high-quality medical care within its borders, strengthening its capacity to serve its citizens, and reducing the financial burdens associated with overseas treatment. This effort represents not only a step forward in healthcare infrastructure but also a symbol of Libya’s move toward self-reliance in healthcare.
