Highlighting the need to hold elections presidential and parliamentary elections to achieve stability
TheUnitedNationsSupportMission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressedconcernsoverwhatitcalledtherecent unilateral actsbyLibyanpoliticalactors and institutions, in the East, West and South.
“In thecurrentclimate, these unilateral actsserve to increasetension, undermine trust and furtherentrenchinstitutionaldivisions and discordamongstLibyans. Now more thanever, consensus, dialogue and unity are needed.”
UNSMIL said in a statementonWednesday.
TheHouse of RepresentativesvotedTuesdayendtheterm of theGovernment of NationalUnity and considertheHamadgovernmentthelegitimateoneuntil a unifiedgovernmentischosen, in addition to withdrawingthetitle of Commander-in-Chief of theArmyfromthePresidential Council and returningit to theHouse of Representatives.
UNSMIL remindedallpoliticalleaders and institutions of theircommitments and obligationsundertheLibyanPoliticalAgreement and itsamendments, in line withallrelevant Security Council resolutions, particularlyresolution 2702 (2023).
UNSMIL’srecentconsultationswithLibyanleaders and regional stakeholders to buildconsensus and streamlineefforts to unlockthepoliticalstalemate, willcontinue, as itiscommitted to facilitatingan inclusive politicalprocessleading to crediblepresidential and parliamentaryelections.
GiventhenumerouschallengesLibya faces, UNSMIL has calledonallLibyanparties to embrace dialogue and compromise, in a waythatservestheinterests of allLibyans.
FollowingtheHouse of Representatives' vote, Dbeibahsaidthathisgovernmentderiveditslegitimacyfromthepoliticalagreementincluded in theConstitutionalDeclaration, and thatitdealtwiththerepeatedstatementsissuedbytheHouse of Representativesregardingthewithdrawal of confidence as a non-bindingpoliticalopinionthatwouldnotchangethereality at all.
WhileKhalifaHaftarwelcomedthedecision to stripthePresidential Council of thetitle and powers of theChiefCommander of theArmy and grantthem to the Speaker of theHouse of Representatives, stressingtheneed to holdpresidential and parliamentaryelections to achievestability.
