The president of the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya seeks to strengthen national reconciliation and regional stability
In a bid to promote national reconciliation in Libya and ensure regional stability, the President of Congo-Brazzaville, Denis Sassou Nguesso, has invited Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, leader of the General Command and a key figure in Libyan politics, to attend the upcoming African Union Summit, scheduled for February 15 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The invitation was personally delivered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Congo-Brazzaville, who, accompanied by a delegation from the African Union, met with senior Libyan representatives in Benghazi. During the meeting, Lieutenant General Khairy Al-Tamimi, a member of the «5+5» Joint Military Committee, received the official message addressed to Haftar from President Sassou Nguesso.
Support for the National Reconciliation Project
This initiative is part of the efforts by the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya to promote inclusive dialogue among Libya’s various factions. Denis Sassou Nguesso had previously visited Benghazi in December 2024, where he held key meetings with Khalifa Haftar, Aguila Saleh, President of the House of Representatives, and Osama Hammad, Prime Minister appointed by the Council.
During that visit, Haftar presented an initiative to advance comprehensive national reconciliation in Libya, emphasizing the need for consensus and cooperation to build a secure and stable future for the country. According to sources from the General Command, the proposal aims to lay the groundwork for a consensus document to overcome the political and social fragmentation that has plagued Libya since 2011.
A Step Towards Regional Stability
The Addis Ababa Summit is shaping up to be a crucial opportunity for African leadership to push forward viable solutions to the Libyan crisis. With the participation of Khalifa Haftar, a central figure in the country’s political and military balance, it is expected that international commitments to peace and stability in Libya will be strengthened, a strategic issue for the security of the African continent.
President Sassou Nguesso, in his capacity as head of the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya, has emphasized the importance of uniting efforts to help Libya move towards reconciliation and reconstruction. Haftar’s inclusion in the process underscores the significance of his role in any sustainable political solution.
The international community is closely watching the outcome of this African Union-led process, which could mark a turning point in Libya’s recent history and solidify Africa’s influence in resolving its own conflicts.
