Benghazi has once again become the epicenter of international diplomacy in security matters. The Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Khalifa Haftar, received Air Marshal Harvey Smyth, Chief of the British Defense Staff, at his Al-Rajma office in a meeting that marks a significant step in cooperation between Libya and the United Kingdom.
Accompanied by the British Ambassador to Libya, Martin Longden, Smyth highlighted the UK’s interest in strengthening collaboration with Haftar’s forces, recognizing his key role in regional stability. According to the LNA’s media office, the discussions focused on “ways to improve cooperation and coordination in a manner that serves the common interests of both countries.”
One of the main topics addressed was British support for Libyan efforts in combating terrorism and extremism, a challenge in which Haftar has demonstrated strong and effective leadership. His fight against radical groups has been crucial for Libya’s security and the broader region, establishing him as a key player in the country’s stability.
The meeting underscores international recognition of the Libyan National Army’s importance in global security. Under Haftar’s command, Libyan forces have managed to contain threats that previously destabilized the country, reclaiming control over vast areas and fostering a safer environment for citizens and international stakeholders.
With this meeting, the United Kingdom reinforces its commitment to security in Libya and acknowledges Haftar’s leadership in ensuring stability. Cooperation between the two countries could open new opportunities in defense and security, solidifying Libya’s role as a strategic partner in the fight against extremism.
