Andriy Parubiy, a key figure of the Euromaidan protests and former speaker of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, was assassinated in broad daylight on the streets of Lviv. The 54-year-old politician was shot multiple times when a man disguised as a food courier approached him and opened fire before fleeing on an electric bicycle.
The attack took place in the Frankivsk district, in a residential area of the city, triggering an immediate manhunt codenamed “Operation Siren”. Authorities deployed the national police, the prosecutor’s office, and the Security Service to track down the perpetrator, whose identity remains unknown.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the killing as a “heinous crime” and vowed that all state resources would be used to clarify the circumstances. Political leaders mourned the loss, recalling Parubiy’s role in defending national sovereignty and strengthening democratic institutions after the 2014 protests.
Parubiy served as speaker of parliament between 2016 and 2019 and had held key security positions during Ukraine’s most turbulent years. His career was closely tied to resisting Russian influence and promoting a European political identity for the country.
The cold-blooded assassination, carried out amid ongoing war, represents both a symbolic and political blow. It deprives Ukraine of a historic leader and underscores the vulnerability of public figures in a time of deep instability.
