La compra del 9,9% de Telefónica por parte del grupo saudí STC ha evidenciado las intenciones del país de expandirse por Occidente
El principal operador de telecomunicaciones de Arabia Saudí, STC group, decidió adquirir una participación del 9,9% en Telefónica por un importe total de 2.100 millones de euros. De esta forma, pasa a ser el máximo accionista de la compañía, algo que ha generado cierta inquietud entre los miembros del Gobierno e incluso en la oposición.
La operación ha sido medida al milímetro, ya que ha comprado el 9,9% porque a partir de un 10% el Ministerio de Economía podría vetarlo mediante la acción de oro. Además, para evitar otro veto del ministerio de Defensa, la operación se realizará en dos partes: un 4,9% con acciones directas del capital social de Telefónica y el 5% restante mediante instrumentos financieros.
En el mundo de las telecomunicaciones, los saudíes controlan el 15% de Vodafone y, ahora, casi el 10% de Telefónica. Sin embargo, para esta última aseguran que no tienen intención de tomar el control mayoritario de la compañía.
El fútbol y el golf, sus grandes inversiones
Otro de los sectores donde Arabia Saudí ha decidido realizar una multimillonaria inversión ha sido en el mundo del fútbol. Tras cerrar el fichaje de Cristiano Ronaldo por 200 millones al año, han llegado otras grandes estrellas como Benzema, Neymar, Sadio Mané e incluso Gabri Veiga, la joven promesa del Celta de Vigo que tiene un contrato de 12 millones al año, que supone cerca de 30 veces lo que iba a recibir si se quedaba en algún club español. Además, la Supercopa de España se celebra todos los años allí, gracias a un acuerdo aprobado por el entonces presidente Rubiales.
Por otro lado, se ha comprado la industria del golf, jugador a jugador. Además, es el mayor accionista extranjero de Nintendo, con un 8,96% y también es el mayor accionista de Activision, otro gigante de los videojuegos.
Por otro lado, cuentan con numerosas inversiones en los E-Sports, hasta el punto que el presidente de la Federación de Arabia Saudita, Faisal Bin Bandar, ha pedido mejoras en el sector: «Me gustaría ver más innovación en las cosas que estamos haciendo al respecto. Cuando hablas de juegos, hay ciertos lugares que sabes que te vienen a la cabeza, como Corea del Sur, Japón, conoces Los Ángeles o Burbank, conoces ciertos lugares en Europa. Quiero que Arabia Saudita esté en esa lista donde, cuando piensas en juegos, sea uno de esos lugares».
Por último, Arabia Saudí también paga a investigadores universitarios españoles que domicilien sus investigaciones en el país, con el objetivo de subir el ranking de sus universidades, tal y como publicó el diario El País.
